Grandma's Yo-Yo Biscuits

These biscuits are so simple to make but will impress everyone because of there design... they look just like yo-yo's. They were my Grandma's friend's recipe and were made in 1949 ... you could say these biscuits have been tried and tested to their maximum!

Onto the recipe - makes round 22 (you could double or even triple the recipe if needs be)

For the biscuits

  • 3 oz margarine
  • 1 oz icing sugar
  • 1 oz custard power
  • 3 oz plain flour
For the butter-cream icing
  • 1 oz butter
  • 2 oz icing sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pink food colouring
1. Preheat the oven to a moderate temperature - Gas Mark 5 / 375 F / 190 C
2. Line a baking tray with margarine and grease-proof paper to prevent them sticking
3. Combine all the biscuit ingredients in a large bowl until the mixture comes together
4. Shape into small balls, rather less then a teaspoon full at a time
5. Flatten slightly and mark with a fork (you could prick to add a design them or lay the fork onto them to slightly flatten them)
6. Place them onto the tray 1/2" apart
7. Cook for around 15-20 minutes
8. Place on a cooling rack
9. Once cool combine the butter, sugar and vanilla extract into a thick paste.
10. Add a few drops of pink food colouring into the icing
11. Then optionally place into a piping bag, and sandwich two of the biscuits together to create the yo-yo affect.

There you have it, super easy yo-you biscuits. Perfect to do with children or to quickly whip up before guests come round. Enjoy xx
